Being pregnant and a parent I’m always looking at new things that are available. Or that may be available in the future to help benefit my children . I have recently been introduced to the idea of collecting stem cells at birth. This is something I didn’t know too much about .The more and more I read about it the more it interests me.
You may be thinking what the hell are stem cells ?
Stem cells have the potential to develop into a variety of different cells within the body .These include blood, bone tissue and organ. These are then used to repair the body. You may have heard of stem cells being used to help treat people with leukaemia and lymphoma . Scientists reckon that in the future they will be able to use stem cells for even more treatments which is amazing !!
Why collect them at birth ?
The blood collected at birth from the umbilical cord has a rich source of potentially life saving stem cells. These cells are normally just thrown away and not used at all . So it’s not harming anyone collecting them in fact it could save or help Someone.
Now if you want to know more about stem cells and stem cell collection then watch this short video below. I found it very interesting and informative.
