2 super simple snake crafts

Welcome to our next Bostik bloggers post. If this is the first time you have seen our Bostik crafts post why not take a look at what we did last month. Each month we are given a theme to which to create a craft around this months theme is animals. Our super simple snake crafts have been inspired by two things this month. The first being a snake we have seen recently whilst going around the “free zoo” at the garden centre. Ava was amazed by this snake and since then she has really started to take an interest in them.

The second inspiration was from Ava’s two year check. For those of you that haven’t heard of a two year check before. It’s a developmental check which is done generally between the ages of 2-2/12 years. The check goes over a whole range of things to see if your child is developing in line with “normal” development for a children of that age. Our 2 year check came through the post the other day and I started to fill it in ready for our meeting with the health visitor. A lot of the stuff Ava can do with ease. Then there was the question can your child thread beads onto a piece of string ? I honestly didn’t know so I thought it would be great to incorporate this into a craft. So it’s a fun learning experience. Take a look below at our two super simple snake crafts.

Beaded snakes

This is a really simple activity that can show if your child has the control to threat beads.

You will need

• A pipe cleaner,
• Beads,
• googly eyes.

First of all you will need to tie a knot at one end of the pipe cleaner. Make sure that this knot isn’t right at the end you want to leave a little bit of pipe cleaner on the end so it looks like the snakes tongue.

I then asked Ava to threat some beads of her choosing on the to pipe cleaner. This is a perfect opportunity to talk about the different colours. If your child is older than Ava and this might seem to simple why not ask them to create a repeating pattern using the beads.

Once your pipe cleaner is full of beads you will need to tie off the end so that they don’t fall off.

Next we added the googly eyes. The googly eyes that we had in our craft box had a loop on the back of them so you could thread something through them. These worked perfectly. We threaded a small piece of pipe cleaner through the loops then attached it to the snake’s body. To do this we simply wrapped the pipe cleaner with the eyes on around the top section you tied off to make a tongue. Take a look at the picture below it may make it a bit more easier to understand.

There you have it one beaded snake. Why not sing a song about your snake Ava loves to sing it gets her attention and makes her concentrate for longer. Take a look at the song we sing about snakes below.

Number snakes

We are trying our best with number at the minute and Ava is getting very confident counting to 5 with ease and sometimes counting to ten. So to continue on with her interest of snakes. I thought it might be fun to make some number snakes. These are really easy to make but can be used during free play or during adult led number activities.

You will need

• card,
• pipe cleaners,
• Felt tip pens,
• Sticky foam squares,
• Glu dots.

We started by cutting 5 snake shaped heads as we were looking at numbers 1-5. I then asked Ava to draw on them to give them a splash of colour.

whilst she was doing this I cut out 5 circles in a different colour card and wrote numbers one to 5 on them.

Once these are all done you will need to make their bodies which Is really simple. All you need to do it get a pipe cleaner and wrap it around your finger or a pencil to give the snake a more rounded body. repeat this until you have the desired amount of bodies

Then you need to connect the heads and the number to the snakes bodies. We did this by using some Bostik foam pads. We placed them on the back of both the head and the number and pushed the pipe cleaner down onto it and we found it stuck really well. You could also do this with PVA glue if you wished or some tape.

We then attached a short piece of string to look like a tongue coming from the snakes mouth. We attached these using Bostik Glu dots.

That’s it all done . Like the snake song above here’s another one for you but this time a number song. This one I remember from many years of working in childcare
