Growing up in a world with Instagram filters
Times really have changed there were no such thing as Instagram filter when I was growing up. It wasn’t so long ago that I was a teenager experimenting with make up . Not that I was ever very good at it and I’m still not today . We would put some foundation on bit of blusher , mascara and maybe some eyeshadow or eyeliner if you were on a night out . Many teenagers now would be in shock if I asked them to wear as little makeup as I do .
Is the Instagram filter to blame are our children seeing unrealistic things on the internet and are wanting to achieve them . Should we as parents stop them and tell them more often they don’t need makeup they are beautiful . Don’t get me wrong I do love a good Instagram filter but should I stop . Should I show my daughter it’s ok to be natural .
Only last weekend I was with a group of 13-year-old girls getting ready for a dance show . Their makeup routine was crazy . The contraptions they would use to apply their makeup I wouldn’t know where to start with them. They would also contour their face like crazy . So at the end of it they were almost unrecognisable. Which in my opinion wasn’t needed at all they were all beautiful before hand . I even heard many a conversations about wanting a nose job or brow lift when they were older ! I mean that’s just crazy talk .
My up bringing may have something to do with it . My mom isn’t a big makeup fan . So that’s rubbed off on me . I have days now when I have gone out the house without any on. Maybe that’s also come with age as I really don’t care what people think now . The fact I have made it out the house means I’m a winner in my books .
I really don’t want my daughter to grow up body conscious and want to change things about herself .
I think we need to think about what we do as parents . We need to make a change for them to realise it’s ok . The biggest thing is the media they need to take this stance stop air brushing everything , use less makeup ,look more natural !
